The Changing Economic Outlook and its Impact on Our Industry

In the global economy of the 21st century, the so-called BRIC countries (i.e., Brazil, Russia, India, and China) have been assuming a greater role, shaking up the existing order and generating waves of uncertainty around the world. How will the world be reshaped by their emergence? What will be the impact on European economies? How does this new economic order impact our industry? For example, who is the new traveller? How they are travelling? And where they are going? Industry Requirements for EC261 - Clarification from the European Commission

Veronica Manfredi
Member of the Cabinet, Commissioner for Transport
European Commission

The volcanic ash cloud that closed most European airports earlier this year created renewed in interest in EC261, the law requiring airlines to pay penalties to travelers for flight interruptions or cancellations. EC261 has been a source of friction in the industry since it was adopted in 2005, partly due to limited awareness of passengers’ rights, murky enforcement (especially among non-European carriers), and penalties for activities and events that are outside of the airlines’ control. Veronica Manfredi member of the Cabinet for the Commissioner for Transport, will provide clarification on the legal requirements of EC261 and highlight the EC’s efforts to educate travelers about the law.
