ACTE Names Former Assistant Dean of Georgetown University Law Center As Executive Director

Alexandria (Va) Apr. 22 - The Association of Corporate Travel Executives has named a lawyer with 15 years of experience in senior management, the not-for-profit sector and higher education as executive director. Susan Gurley, former assistant dean of International and Graduate Programs at Georgetown University Law Center, will officially begin as ACTE's executive director on April 25, 2005.

Gurley's distinguished career at Georgetown included the creation and management of graduate courses on international law, legislative reform, tax, and securities and financial regulations. It also entailed oversight of 200 adjunct faculty members and a professional staff of ten. She was instrumental in analyzing the educational needs of graduate law students from 57 countries and devising programs that matched evolving corporate requirements on a global scale. Gurley's efforts substantially increased both the visibility of the graduate program and the law school's income opportunities.

Prior to her position at Georgetown, Gurley served as senior manager at the East-West Management Institute (EWMI), a not-for-profit organization focusing on legal reform in developing countries. She managed a number of overseas offices and won EWMI's first Asian Development Bank (ADB) funded project - which expanded the institute's activities in Asia.

Gurley's experience with the U.S. government is equally impressive. She worked with senior U.S. and foreign government officials to develop a number of commercial law and legislative reform programs. Gurley was named deputy director of the Commercial Law Development Program at the U.S. Department of Commerce in 1992, and held that position for two years. She served as special assistant to Republican Appointee, Commissioner Anne Graham, at the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission in 1987, dealing with product liability, voluntary industry standards, and children's safety concerns.

Susan Gurley speaks fluent German, plus conversational French and Hungarian. She has worked extensively in Europe, Central and Eastern Europe, Russia, the new Independent States, Central and South America, and Asia. Gurley received a Juris Doctor from the University of Virginia Law School.

Her experience with the U.S. government will expedite our message to federal authorities. The new director's strong educational background will be an asset in working with academia, and in strengthening our educational direction. The search for a new executive director spanned four months and drew more than 100 resumes, which were screened by a committee of former ACTE presidents. These were Earl Foster, Armand LeCompte, Ron Wagner, Cheryl Hutchinson, and Mark Williams.
