The Nexus of Demand Management and Sustainable Travel

Melbourne, Australia
19 June 2007
The Westin Melbourne
Demand management of business travel points towards a decrease in the volume of travel based largely on financial measurements but is there a connection between this and the need to be responsible in the way travel is used? Can demand management also contribute towards a culture of sustainable travel? We examine both subjects individually and discuss the possible nexus of their individual objectives.

ACTE/VDR Partner Event

CSR and Business Travel
12 June 2007
Frankfurt, Germany
Two key components of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) will provide the focus for this Forum.  First an examination will be undertaken to understand business’ efforts to support sustainability throughout their enterprises and particularly within travel and how both corporate travel departments and suppliers working together can offer sustainable solutions.
The Forum will then turn its attention to corporate duty of care of traveling employees. The session will provide measures the travel department can take to mitigate risk, including raising awareness among travelers that only through their cooperation and compliance to prescribed processes is it enabled to support their safe travels.

Carbon Emissions and Managed Travel: Cutting Through the Smog

Need a clear view on one of the most important issues facing the travel industry? This session provides a solid platform from which to understand and communicate the key issues related to carbon emissions and managed travel. Designed for travel, procurement, and corporate social responsibility managers, this session explores the drivers of airline emissions, compares the emission profiles of trains, planes, and cars, reveals early benchmarks of several major managed travel programs, and discusses the options for managing emissions in a socially responsible way.

Sustainable Procurement: What is the Green Question?

Sustainability as a corporate philosophy is gaining increased awareness, but translating the philosophy into a practice is more difficult to achieve. Many corporate travel purchasers include generic “green questions” in their RFPs that lack clear objectives, deferring to the vendor to decipher what the purchaser desires. This session will focus on:

  • what is sustainable travel
  • key components of “green” RFPs
  • metrics and benchmarks
  • trends in environmentally conscious business practices

Julie O’Leary, Global Purchasing Manager, Business Travel, Pilkington

Profiling Carbon Emissions from Corporate Travel
The presentation will introduce the first major project undertaken by the ACTE Global Centre for Research and Education, which has been commissioned by the founding contributors, IBM, TRX and the University of Sheffield. The presentation will provide insight into climate change issues related to corporate travel. It will review the latest science of climate change; current understanding of the role of aviation-based emissions; the economic and business case for corporations to take action; and current reporting practices. It will also examine the scope for achieving future emissions reduction including the role of future regulations and offsetting and mitigation practices. Project staff can be found at the Technology Showcase throughout the conference and are keen to discuss with delegates steps being taken within their own corporations to monitor and reduce the carbon impact of corporate travel.

M201 Responsible Purchasing: Utilising Green RPFs

An ACTE survey of travel purchasers reveals a growing interest in the environmental implications of managed travel programmes.  More than one-third of survey respondents indicate that they are currently assessing travel suppliers based on their environmental credentials and are actually changing and/or “de-listing” suppliers based on a poor record.  This session explores:

  • Key components of “green” RFPs
  • How suppliers can best answer these new questions
  • Trends in environmentally conscious business practices

Sustainable Procurement
In the past many companies have focused on industry as the primary source of carbon emissions, however there is a growing realisation that
transportation can account for a significant proportion of an organisationÕs carbon footprint.  Governments and companies are becoming increasingly informed of the impacts travel can have on not just the environment, but the bottom line, their productivity, and CSR policies. By deconstructing the principles of Sustainable Development, and communicating these to potential suppliers though a sustainable procurement process, the UK Government aspires to become a European leader in sustainable procurement by 2009.

David describes how UK Government Procurement Policy is embracing the concept of Sustainable Development and reviews the recommendations from the Sustainable Procurement Advisory Committee.

Travelling Against the Trafficking of Human Cargo
Tom Ehr, Executive Director, MTV Europe Foundation

Human trafficking is on the rise, enslaving large numbers of people, particularly women and children, trapping them in sexual servitude and other forms of involuntary labor. The human trafficking industry is global, sophisticated and profitable.  It has close and pernicious ties to other criminal networks. Its spread is virtually unchecked as efforts to catch and prosecute traffickers, alert potential victims and aid the recovery of rescued victims continues to be woefully inadequate to the challenge. New thinking and approaches are needed and no prior knowledge of the issue is assumed.

ACTE urges companies to develop internal training and public awareness programs to combat this issue. ACTE is committed to working with our stakeholders to encourage them to sign the appropriate treaties and conventions.
