UK Data Privacy Policy

  1. The U.K Government, as part of Prime Minister's policy review, is considering relaxing data protection laws to allow data-sharing across governmental agencies. The government organized a consultation group, composed of 100 members of the public, entrusted to debate the privacy/data-sharing "trade-off" on 15 January 2007. The group is expected to report back to Prime Minister Tony Blair's cabinet in early March. To read more on Prime Minister Blair's Policy Review please click here .
  2. The European Union has requested further information from the United States following the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) published information on its Automated Targeting System (ATS). At present, the EU and US have a temporary agreement - expires July 2007 Ð under which European citizen Passenger Name Record (PNR) data is shared within negotiated strict privacy limitations. The concerns, commented upon by European Commission Vice President Franco Frattini, cite "significant differences between the way in which PNR data are handled within the Automated Targeting System on the one hand and the stricter regime for European PNR data according to the undertakings given by the DHS."
