Airport Congestion: When Can We Expect Some Relief?

It’s not only the inside of commercial airplanes that are crowded. Taking a look out the window of almost any aircraft on the ground at a US airport yields a view of a longer line of planes waiting to take off than ever seen before. More obscured from casual observation though, is what is occurring above us as the approaches to major airports have become more crowded. Delays on the ground and above have clearly diminished productivity for road warriors and eaten into the profits of airlines. This session will look at where and when the industry can expect relief to this untenable situation.

Presenter:
Dr. George Donohue, Professor of Systems Engineering and Operations Research, Director of the Center for Air Transportation Systems Research, Volgeneau School of Information Technology and Engineering, George Mason University

09:45 – 10:30

Traveling into My Space

Generation “Y”--the 78 Million people born between 1979 and 1999--now represent 20% of the current workforce. This new wave of employees, drawn from the “MySpace” generation, have lived their entire lives digitally “connected”, and have a mantra that stresses “Work to live, not live to work”. Understand how the corporation and the travel program particularly need to prepare for new requirements as travel technology moves off the desktop and into the hands of a much more tech-savvy and advanced population of end users.
