Pre-Conference Tours

Saturday, 13 November

Granada Tour, 08:00 - 17:30, Tour #401 (without lunch) 65
This guided tour will take you through the multi-coloured and fascinating countryside surrounding Granada. You will travel through mountains, plains and expanses of olive tree groves. Once in Granada, you will visit Alhambra, the fortress, citadel, and an outstanding example of Hispano-Arab art and architecture. After an extensive visit of the Alhambra and Charles V Palace, the tour will continue on to the famous gardens of Generalife, the summer palace of the Nazarite Kings.

Sunday, 14 November

Mijas Tour, 0900-1300, Tour #402 (without lunch) 25
This guided tour will take you to Mijas, a typical Andalusian village, often-called the "essence" of Andalusia. The flavour of popular Andalusian architecture has been preserved in the whitewashed houses, with the barred windows full of flowers along narrow winding streets. Shopping is one of the pleasures to be enjoyed in Mijas, unencumbered by afternoon siesta closings.

Marbella Tour, 0900-1300, Tour #403 (without lunch) 25
Since its beginning as a tiny fishing village, Marbella has grown and blossomed into one of the world's premier resorts. This guided tour provides a walking tour through the maze of narrow streets and tiny squares found throughout Marbella's Old Town, a confluence of Moorish and Christian aesthetics. The remains of an Arab wall surround the old part of the city enclosing narrow streets and secluded plazas. After the walk, enjoy the view from one of the terraces on the famous Plaza de los Naranjos (Orange Tree Square), sipping coffee as people stroll by.

Post-Conference Tours

Wednesday, 17 November

Seville Tour, 07:30 - 19:30, Tour # 404 (without lunch) 60
This guided tour begins with a two-hour drive to Seville, travelling through scenic and fascinating countryside. In Seville, you will visit the cultural monuments of the city, such as the Cathedral built in the XV century, carvings by Martinez Montanes and paintings by Murillo, Zurbaran and Goya. This tour will also offer a visit to Alcazar, a former Moorish fortress and Palace of the Kings, Maria Luisa Park and the old and charming Santa Cruz quarter.

Ronda Tour, 08:00 - 17.00, Tour # 405 (without lunch) 42
After a 1.5 hour drive though the Serrania de Ronda, a natural preserve of wildlife and plants you will arrive in Ronda. A guided tour of this town, one of the oldest in Spain, will show how the cultures of Celts, Phoenicians, Romans and Arabs have left their imprint. Ronda is nestled in a mountain range that protects it from the fast-moving winds of change. The dramatic Tajo (gorge) on which the town is built serves as a symbolic divide between the old-fashioned folk of Ronda and the visitors who flood into the area. You will also spend time walking through the typical streets and will see the old cathedral, built on the site of a former mosque.

Tangier, 06:30 - 19:00, Tour #406 (with lunch) 65
This tour begins with a crossing of the Mediterranean to the port of Tangier. The guided tour will take you through the Moroccan countryside including Cape Spartel, the junction of the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. Camel riding is an available option here. The second part of the day is a walking tour through the Medina, Kasbah and the various Zoccos or markets. A very colourful and exciting site, where beautiful art and handicraft items are available for purchase.

Optional Guest Tours

Monday, 15 November

Spanish Gastronomy and Wines10:00 - 15:00, Tour #407 (without lunch) 55
After departure from the hotels, this tour will travel to Málaga to the Parador of Gibralfaro, near the "Castillo de Gibralfaro". This palace is said to have been originally built by Phoenicians. In the 14th century Moorish Caliph Yasuf I built a fortress over the palace that is conserved until today. From the top of the Gibralfaro castle there are wonderful views of the city and the port. Once in the Parador, coffee and "churros" (a kind of non-sweet donut) will be offered. Following this "coffee break" the tour will visit the Bodegas of Málaga and include wine tasting! The wines are clearly mediterranean, sweet and velvety. Their production is documented from way back; Málaga was already known in ancient times for wine trading. Afterwards a visit to one of the typical bars in the centre of town will be made, where a drink and some "tapas" may be tasted.

Tuesday, 16 November

Mijas Tour, 10:00 - 15:00, Tour #408 (without lunch) 25
This guided tour will take you to Mijas, a typical Andalusian village, often-called the "essence" of Andalusia. The flavour of popular Andalusian architecture has been preserved in the whitewashed houses, with barred windows full of flowers along narrow winding streets. Shopping is part of the Mijas experience, where shops stay open from 10:00 to 19:00.
