Alexandria, Va --
With an estimated 80 million migrant workers around the world, labour migration has moved to the top of the economic and social agendas of many countries. The Association of Corporate Travel Executives (ACTE) will convene a high profile panel discussion at its upcoming Global Education Conference in Rome, 5-7 October on labour migration, its impact on the hospitality industry, and how it can tap into this potential labour pool.
The panel, Possibilities and Problems – Labour migration issues facing the corporate travel and hospitality industries, will consist of two speakers from the International Office for Migration (IOM): Scott Schirmer, Private Sector Liaison and Panel Moderator, and Jonathan Martens, Counter-trafficking Expert.
The two-hour seminar will focus on the employment challenges and labour issues faced by the corporate travel and hospitality industries, and how the industry can collaborate with international organizations and the business sector to access the migrant labour pool. The session will also highlight how the industry can develop programmes to respond to the long-term impacts of labour migration and labour mobility, which can mutually benefit migrants and the hospitality and corporate travel industries.
“Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) within the corporate travel industry is not just about reducing carbon emissions,” said Richard Crum, ACTE President. “The industry is now facing an unprecedented talent gap, and ACTE is working with both industry and international organizations to tap into this shifting labour pool for the economic benefit of all. ACTE has partnered with IOM, and also is collaborating with the International Hotel and Restaurant Association, to raise awareness of this issue and to offer solutions on how to promote and increase more responsible practices.”
“Labour migration issues are having a huge impact on reshaping societies,” said Scott Schirmer, IOM’s Private Sector Liaison. “IOM’s role in labour migration is to facilitate the development of policies and programmes that can individually and mutually benefit society. Therefore, we are delighted to be partnering with ACTE to help engage and inform the corporate and hospitality industries on these key issues.”
In addition to the panel discussion, the ACTE Global Education Conference will feature a keynote presentation by National Public Radio European Correspondent Sylvia Poggioli, A Common Thread: Weaving New Immigrant Populations into Europe’s Social Fabric, and two education sessions on CSR-related issues: New Technologies for Business Travel and Managing the Pain/Cost of Green.
