Globalization & the Impact of Current World Affairs
The Honorable Madeleine Korbel Albright
|
The first woman secretary of state and the highest-ranking woman in the history of the United States government, Madeleine Korbel Albright is recognized as one of the world's foremost authorities on human rights and the greatest advocate of global business. Her accomplishments as the 64th secretary of state include reversing a policy of ethnic cleansing in Kosovo, the promotion of peace in the Balkans and the reduction of world nuclear threats. Albright engineered hundreds of agreements -- stimulating international trade from China to Africa -- always with an eye for advancing American business interests overseas.
World leader, executive, and diplomat, Madeleine Albright served as the United States' permanent Representative to the United Nations and as a member of the President's cabinet and National Security Council (1993-1997). Her expertise ranges from foreign policy, national security issues, global economic matters, and world commerce. Dr. Albright is the founder of The Albright Group LLC; the first Michael and Virginia Mortara Endowed Distinguished Professor in the Practice of Diplomacy at the Georgetown School of Foreign Service; and the first Distinguished Scholar of the William Davidson Institute at the University of Michigan Business School. She is also the chairman of The National Democratic Institute for International Affairs, chair of The PEW Global Attitudes Project and president of the Truman Scholarship Foundation.

Business & Economic Update
The Honorable Robert B. Reich
|
Robert B. Reich served as the United States' 22nd secretary of labor during President Clinton's first term. Under Reich's direction, the Labor Department initiated two groundbreaking programs to enhance employee skills: The School-To-Work Opportunities Act (enhancing the transition from secondary education into career development for students who do not graduate college), and Goals 2000 (a national system of skills standards).
Reich was instrumental in setting new benchmarks for protecting the retirement guarantees of American workers, advocating safer work-sites, and exposing the fraudulent purveyors of pensions and health insurance. He played a key role in raising the minimum wage -- for the first time since 1989. Reich served as an assistant to the Solicitor General in the Ford Administration (where he represented the United States before the Supreme Court), prior to which he headed the policy planning staff of the Federal Trade Commission in the Carter Administration. He was a member of the faculty of Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government and currently is the Maurice B. Hexter professor of social and economic policy at Brandeis University's Heller Graduate School.
Reich has authored eight books -- including The Work of Nations (now translated into 22 languages), the best seller Locked in the Cabinet, published by Alfred Knopf, and The Future of Success, ranked by BusinessWeek magazine as the No. 2 best-selling business book. He has written more than 200 articles on the global economy, the changing nature of work and the centrality of human capital and is a consultant to many governments and corporations.

Technology & the Future
Evan Solomon
|
Three things Evan Solomon is qualified to speak about are: the news, how the news is determined, and what factors constitute media motivation in the world today. He is cofounder and executive-editor of Shift Magazine, an award winning national magazine about media, entertainment and technology; the host of Hot Type (CBC Newsworld's provocative show on print culture); and co-host of CBC News: Sunday (a weekly information program that explores the "why" behind the news). Solomon received three Gemini nominations as host of Futureworld (for exploring cutting-edge developments in culture and technology) and is a regular columnist on The National (CBC's flagship newsmagazine show).
Having worked as journalist in Hong Kong for the South China Morning Post and reported throughout Asia and Europe, Solomon has a unique global perspective. His observations dispel many of the myths and hype surrounding the digital world, and present a refreshing picture of where things actually stand. In 1997, Evan was named one of the "100 Canadians to Watch" by Maclean's.
