Resolution for the New Year
By Mark Williams
ACTE President

It's customary to begin the new year with at least one resolution. Most people plan to lose weight, give up smoking or improve themselves in some way. Quite frankly, I find this rather limiting. Not just these suggestions, but the entire concept of a resolution. The very word "resolution" conjures up some fragile glass-like promise, poised for breaking. Rather than beginning the year with "a" resolution, I think we're better off beginning it with resolution -- the state of being resolute.

I am personally resolved to learn all I can about the crucial issues (airport security, airline bankruptcy, global economics and the trickle-down effect outside pressures directly and indirectly exert on my company). I am resolved to find out what I can do about them. And I'm resolved to pursue those ends in the act of fulfilling my responsibilities as an executive of my company and of this association.

I'm also resolved not to take the first working solution. But to take what works with the understanding that a better, more comprehensive approach to a problem needs to be developed as the problem continues to evolve. And we will have our challenges. The airlines are finally faced with the prospects of rebuilding both cost and pricing structures. The government is reinventing national security with terrorism as the major threat. And the role of the travel manager is changing into a far more complicated position.

ACTE has a major role to play in each of these scenarios. I am resolute that this association will continue as a catalyst for rationalization, recovery and a return to global prosperity. Resolutions tend to be made of glass. The sense of resolution we need to feel for the next year has to be made of leather -- like our initiatives -- so it can be kicked around (if need be) before we run with it.

Sincerely,
Mark A. Williams
