Calgary -- Marriott Hotels and Resorts Canada has joined a growing number of companies supporting the Association of Corporate Travel Executives (ACTE) green initiative by offsetting carbon generated by a major travel industry conference. According to a statement issued today by association Executive Director Susan Gurley, Marriott is underwriting the cost of offsetting carbon generated by ACTEs Canada Education Conference, to be held in Calgary, 18-20 November, 2007.
ACTE takes great pride in leading the industry in carbon low conferences and executive forums, said Gurley. Marriotts generosity and insight makes it possible to extend our global carbon low initiative to national conferences within individual ACTE regions. In this case, well be able to further reduce our carbon footprint in Calgary this month.
Following the conference, ACTE will submit to Marriott a complex table measuring the carbon generated by transporting and supporting 300 delegates to the three-day event. This process will make it possible to approximate the number of tons of carbon generated. Marriott will then fund a process, through a third party provider, offsetting the carbon generated.
Marriott Hotels and Resorts Canada has distinguished itself as a good global citizen through this activity, and others that support the environment, said Gurley. It is fitting that Marriott has chosen this event, as it was in Vancouver, Canada three years ago that ACTE introduced corporate social responsibility as a major travel industry initiative.
The ACTE Canada Education Conference also features a direct CSR focus with a buyer-driven session -- M301 Sustainability - Implementing The Vision -- which will enable participants to establish objectives, to determine the most effective steps in implementing sustainability, to share recent findings. Registrant interest indicates this will be on the heaviset attended sessions of the conference.
ACTE has spearheaded CSR at its global conferences and regional forums by restricting the number of hard copy handouts and combining critical meetings where possible. In 2008, ACTE and Business Travel News will be combining Corporate Travel World under one roof in Washington, DC, saving industry practitioners both time and money.
