American Express Company today issued the following statement regarding United States Government assistance to the airline industry:

We believe a strong airline sector is critically important to the health of the US and the global economy. The travel industry - and the airlines in particular - have been hit particularly hard by the fallout of last week's terrorist attacks. We believe there is an appropriate role for the US Government to play in providing immediate financial support for the airline industry. The long-term economic growth of the US depends in part on the ability of consumers and business people to travel throughout the US and around the world. American Express will work closely with its business partners throughout the travel industry to support appropriate assistance from the US Government.
