ACTE Travel Management Forum

"Industry Trends "

August 15, 2000
Hanover Marriott Hotel
Whippany, New Jersey, USA

It's been a wild year so far for anyone whose job is affected, even peripherally, by corporate travel - as a buyer, supplier, intermediary, V.C. specialist, Internet analyst...or a purchasing manager or sourcing expert caught up in yet another corporate megamerger. This ACTE Forum will include presentations focusing on three very different areas: the always-transitioning airline industry; new ways to manage hotel programs; and how to create a new - and improved - travel program when two companies with divergent policies merge.

The program includes continental breakfast, lunch and all study materials including handouts. Don't miss this exciting opportunity to LEARN, INNOVATE and NETWORK with your peers!

Program

CORPORATE MERGERS: The Impact on a Travel Management Program

This session will allow participants to study the successful approach to redefining a travel program taken by Tim Berndt, Manager, Global Travel Procurement, Allied Signal Inc. which, after merging last year with Honeywell, now counts 40,000 travelers globally. The lessons and insights will apply to mergers and travel programs of all sizes. This case study will illustrate how to:

  • Evaluate issues such as program redundancy, traveler compliance, data capture and supplier responsiveness
  • Identify issues that may impede the success of the new program
  • Determine preferred vendors
  • Overcome incompatible technology platforms
  • Identify and apply best practices throughout the new company
  • Know when to leave well enough alone

CREATIVE HOTEL PROGRAM DESIGN: An Interactive Discussion

A panel of industry experts, including a corporate travel manager, hotel executive, and consultant, will deconstruct hotel programs, which are much more complicated than they appear at face value. Once hotel industry trends have been outlined, the discussion will cover rates (the dollar kind and the occupancy kind), general pricing trends, hotel industry consolidation, consolidation of meeting and transient travel hotel purchasing, new ways to negotiate, new fees and what to do about them, and what's new in sourcing.

UP IN THE AIR: WhatÕs Happening to the Airline Industry?

Potential mega-airline mergers British Airways/KLM and United Airlines/USAirways created a flurry of attention - on Wall Street and at the U.S. Justice Department, but the ever shrinking airline pool isn't the only thing that's troubling corporate buyers. Fuel costs are volatile and unpredictable; labor unrest at various unions is fomenting; distribution models keep morphing, and new ways to buy tickets (direct from airlines; through new, airline-approved secondary markets, off distressed-inventory websites and corporate travel intranets) are changing buyer/supplier relationships in ways nobody could have imagined three years ago. Oh yes, and there's an election coming up, which always makes predictions interesting. Sam Buttrick, Managing Director of Paine Webber's Research Department will put these issues in perspective, divulge Wall Street's forecast for the aviation industry, and give travel managers the insights they need for their next airline negotiation.
