ACTE's Executive Director To Retire At Year's End
|
Alexandria, VA (Oct. 8) -- "All of you have heard me talking about retirement
for the last year, and there's a lot of things I want to do," said
Association of Corporate Travel Executives' Executive Director Nancy Holtzman on her
weekly conference call to staff this morning. And so began the announcement that
ACTE's flamboyant executive director would be retiring as of December 31,
2004.
Holtzman began her career in the business travel management sector working
for Continental Airlines in 1979 -- at a time when the Civil Aeronautics Board
was about to sunset and when most companies were still struggling to draft a
written travel policy. She was one of the very first airline sales executives to
make corporate marketing a separate initiative. Holtzman signed on as ACTE's
executive director in 1997.
"My tenure at ACTE spans the most significant years in my career," said
Holtzman. "When I began, the association had a staff of three, was largely
U.S.-centric, and had a membership of approximately 1,200. Seven years later, our
educational program spans the globe. We have proven that cost-containment policies
go far beyond the travel management function. We're interacting with
governments, institutions of higher learning, and industry coalitions on three
continents. And our membership has grown by 104 percent to 2,500. Taking this
organization from what was essentially a U.S. travel management trade association --
focused on travel operations -- to an international travel management
authority -- with an emphasis on strategy -- is my crowning achievement."
Holtzman presided as ACTE's executive director during some of the darkest
years in business travel history -- through global recession, the horror of 911,
and the SARS scare. She attributes the value of ACTE's innovative programs and
a policy of advancing the entire industry (as opposed to industry segments)
as the formula for the association's survival -- and growth -- during this
difficult time. "ACTE's success is the story of aligning resources and vision with
the objectives of a dedicated membership, leadership and staff."
Holtzman will continue in her present capacity until the end of the year.
ACTE's Board of Directors has already begun the search for a new Executive
Director.
"ACTE bears Nancy Holtzman's thumbprint on every project and initiative,"
said association President Garth Jopling. "We owe her our thanks and our best
wishes. We're going to miss her and wish her well. Yet knowing Nancy like I do --
and her commitment to this association -- I know we can count on her help and
advice at any time."
