ACTE Corporates Demand Transparency

Alexandria, VA (Dec. 15) -- Corporates will not tolerate a lack of transparency from their conference organisers. This was the message given by Corporates at the recent Association of Travel Executives (ACTE) event hosted on 30 November 2004 in Johannesburg, South Africa.

South Africa's conference industry seems to be in a state of disarray and the sector paying for this disarray is the Corporate sector. There is a feeling that many PCO's are taking full advantage of the lack of regulation within the Industry and are charging over-inflated fees, as well as receiving commissions from suppliers. Corporates are demanding transparency of fees and are dissatisfied with PCO's earning off revenue streams that are not transparent and are not directly related to the client-approved management fee.

The seeming lack of regulation in the industry was highlighted with Corporates claiming that the quote discrepancies that they receive for the same event can range from R 20 000.00 to R 40 000.00 on a single item.

This event was part of a broader effort by ACTE to deal with issues pertinent to the travel industry and the well-being of all sectors involved.

ACTE will be following up with this issue in 2005 and in keeping with ACTE's vision of education, communication and transparency, will be inviting a representative of SAACI (South African Association for the Conference Industry) to present to ACTE delegates in 2005.
Issues requiring clarification relate to regulation of Management Fees, the accreditation process for PCO's to be listed with SAACI and issue of commissions paid by venues and how this affects the Corporate.

The event hosted on 30 November was attended by dozens of high-level industry representatives, evenly spread over the 3 travel sectors.

The event included presentations from a PCO and a large South African Corporation regarding meetings management and consolidation, a report back from the ACTE Global Event hosted in Stockholm in October, and the results of the Corporate Travel Survey conducted by the University of Pretoria.

The Event was highly rated by Corporate attendees and received an overall evaluation of 3.2 out of 4 for relevance.
