Members Voice Concern Over Alliance Partners' Safety
(Alexandria,
VA, USA, August 22, 2000) A recent poll of ACTE global
members revealed international consensus for the need of information
related to the safety records of airline alliance partners. Citing
this data as essential to making informed decisions for routing
their business travelers, 90% of the corporate travel managers
polled have little or no access to the information through their
principal carrier in an alliance. Many airline alliances have
implemented self-policing safety-audit systems, but a majority
of respondents concur with the observation of the US based travel
manager, who said, "...in the final analysis I believe they
have limited influence in the internal affairs of partner carriers".
Though 70% doubt the efficacy of government imposed measures to
insure increased airline safety, more than half of the respondents
think the United Nations is an effective forum for the question
of global airline safety. As airline alliance partnerships criss-cross
the entire globe, the need for an international governing authority
to monitor, enforce and discipline those carriers with extensive
records of safety infractions appears in order. One respondent
best summed up the overall perspective of the ACTE business travel
managers, "I do not feel that countries go far enough with
respect to safety. I think an international governing body for
worldwide safety could be established to set and enforce safety
guidelines".
Founded in 1988, the Association of Corporate Travel Executives
is the only organization wholly dedicated to the science of business
travel management with an international constituency. ACTE membership
totals more than 2,400, including entities in Asia, Europe, Canada
and the United States. The organization is headquartered in Alexandria,
VA.
