The foundation of the business travel management function is measurement. As you all know, that which can be measured can be managed. Yet the measure of the business travel management professional will be how we as executives respond to new economic pressures, traveller behavioral changes, industry trends, and major environmental concerns in 2008.
And there will be plenty of them.
Our economy has enjoyed one of the strongest growth spurts in Canadian history, joining other world currencies in besting the dollar. But it cannot be denied that one of the world’s largest consumer economies, in the US, is weakening with the possibility of recession becoming reality. This eventuality will have a definite impact on the global economy, and on ours as well. Savvy Canadian travel managers have already begun to plan for this.
The behavioral patterns of business travels have slowly begun to change. ACTE surveys indicate that a greater sense of personal responsibility for the environment is causing travellers to consider the amounts of carbon they generate, and steps to reduce or offset it. ACTE Canada has been extremely proactive in taking steps to advocate this activity... Steps that place us well ahead of even the travel industry standard.
Industry trends cover everything from new pricing models, hidden costs, not-so-hidden costs, technological advances, and major shifts in the roe of the business travel manager. Some of these are predictable. Others are in reaction to sudden developments. It is part of our responsibility to our companies and our travellers to make our programs -- and our industry -- less vulnerable to unanticipated developments. We can do that through preparation. ACTE educational events are the first step in this effort.
ACTE Canada, through the efforts and dedication of volunteers from coast to coast, will address key business travel industry issues – February 20 - Montreal (Corporate Chat, Networking Reception, Silent Auction), February 28 – Toronto (Executive Forum), April 23 – Calgary (Executive Forum) and watch for more events coming soon. Then there is the ACTE Canada Education Conference, taking place 16-18 November, 2008 in Toronto. This is where we summarize where the industry has been and where it is going; what we have accomplished, and what lies ahead.
ACTE is celebrating its twentieth Anniversary this year with the industry’s first “mega” conference. In this era of consolidation, economic concern, and conservation of time, ACTE and Business Travel News have combined a Global Education Conference and Business Travel World into the most comprehensive educational program ever offered to the profession. Two great conferences under one roof. Two great approaches to business travel for one price.
This year will be one of challenge. But it will be remembered here in Canada as one of solutions, and progress.
Sincerely,

Annemarie Reininger
